Rueben Reid attained folk hero status after his goals dumped our feathered friends from S6 out of the Carling Cup at the first hurdle at Hillsborough. It was an evening to savour for the three thousand Millers assembled behind the goal.

Who could have possibly predicted it? A year ago, I was planning my journey to Hereford United for our opener in League Two after relegation. Our opponents that day were expected to struggle despite the optimism of their fans and I believed that game to be a good indicator of how we might fare in the basement.

Ordinarily I wouldn’t have turned out for a pre-season friendly. I’ve been to loads in the past and they generally turn out to be mediocre stop start affairs full of swapping players and a softly, softly approach to the play, after all who wants to risk injury just before the new campaign begins. Today was different I just had to there for our first ever game at Don Valley.
